The Grief Recovery Method
Recovery from loss is accomplished by discovering and completing all of the undelivered communications that accrue in relationships.
What is Emotional Completion?
Recovery from loss is accomplished by discovering and completing all of the undelivered communications that accrue in relationships. We are all advised to “Let go” and “Move on” after losses of all kinds. Most of us would do that if we knew how.
Completion of pain caused by loss is what allows us to let go and move on. It is almost impossible to move on without first taking a series of actions that lead to completion.
Before taking the actions to complete, it is important to look at and often dismiss some of the ideas or myths that we have tried to use with loss, but are not working.
Healing is the end of conflict with yourself.
What the Grief Recovery Method isn’t
Because grief is such a misunderstood and little talked about topic, it may be easier to start by saying what the Grief Recovery Method isn’t:
- It’s not counselling
- It’s not therapy
- It’s not an alternative treatment
While any of the above routes may be of some little or great benefit, they mainly offer a path to discovery of the thoughts and feelings you have around the loss in your life.
However, we maintain that discovery is not the same as recovery.
What is the Grief Recovery Method?
The Grief Recovery Method is an action plan. It is a series of small steps that when taken, in order, by the griever, it leads to the completion of the unresolved business linked to the loss.
The Grief Recovery Method provides proven action choices that help people move beyond the pain caused by loss. It is a program which creates a safe environment in which to:
- look at old beliefs about dealing with loss
- look at what losses have affected your life
- and to take new actions which lead to completion of the pain attached to one of those losses.
This is a simple method that you can take away and continue to use in every day life.
The Grief Recovery Handbook and an accompanying format written and designed by John W. James and Russell Friedman, founders of the Grief Recovery Institute is used as the basis of the training. To ensure your success within the program, I have direct access and support from The Grief Recovery Institute.
Commitment and Attendance
The program is six sessions of approximately 1-2 hours in duration depending on the size of the group or whether it is one on one.
This is not an occasional, drop in group. For the safety and success of all participants, commitment and attendance are essential.

Feedback
“I would definitely recommend this course. Kelly holds the space beautifully, is present and vulnerable, with clear boundaries. She got us to trust the process, which unfolds and is action-based, helping me to stay with my feelings and move through to recovery. I would love to do this again with another group, and hope to do more on my own as well.”
“This program is helpful for many types of loss, not only grief caused by death. Loss is inevitable and this program provides a tool that can be used time and time again. Because I couldn’t see any other way, I began trying to force myself into accepting this intense pain would always be with me. But it no longer feels as intense, and I have gained a deeper understanding of my loss and my grief on an emotional level – thanks to this program. There was so much value in being heard without judgement and without having to sensor my thoughts and feelings.”
A useful tool for dealing with life’s many losses and disappointments. A lovely space to undertake this work. So nice to step outside daily life for connection and reflection.”
A helpful, useful process with a clear structure to it. Allowed me to be reflective and look more deeply into the loss and associated pain, and provided strategies to work with it. I felt it was very powerful being in a group and being heard with no comments or judgements. Great facilitation from Kelly. Thank you.”
